Go Beyond

I wanted to highlight how biomimicry from nature has played a huge part in research and development of new technologies.

Without the inspiration from nature we would not be able to live with the comfort that we do or find solutions for challenging issues that we face such as the global climate crisis due to the overconsumption of fossil fuels leading to the emission of greenhouse gases.

As an example, I have drawn and painted the Common Rose Butterfly which is one of the source of inspiration in developing solar energy technologies as sun is a renewable source of energy.

This butterfly is native to Southeast Asia. It is coldblooded and needs sunlight to fly.

To be able to do so the black-wings of the butterfly have evolved to be efficient at absorbing energy with the help of nano-structured scales and periodic ridges present on their wings.

These structures in the butterfly have been replicated to create thin solar cells that can harvest light efficiently.

The process of emulating such a biological system in nature is called Biomimicry.

This artwork was made during Our Planet Week 2025.
